The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) amended the emergency use authorizations for both the Pfizer-BioNTech and the Moderna COVID-19 vaccines to allow for the use of an additional dose in certain immunocompromised individuals, especially solid organ transplant recipients or those who are diagnosed with conditions that are considered to have an equivalent level of immunocompromise on August 12, 2021.

Following the FDA’s announcement, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) confirmed that Medicare beneficiaries who qualify for an additional dose can receive it with no cost sharing. For coronavirus vaccines administered on or after March 15, 2021, the national average payment rate for physicians, hospitals, pharmacies and many other immunizers is $40 to administer each dose. Medicare will continue to reimburse providers for the third dose at the same rate of $40 to administer it.
